Currently, Stavanger has almost 1200 fewer preschool children than in 2014. Of course, fewer children translate into lower demand for places in kindergarten. Small number increase births this year has little impact on this. This year's proposal for the kindergarten development plan is already ready, and the commune director proposes several changes.
The plan for the use of kindergartens in the commune is updated once a year. The plan was sent for review and will be adopted by Stavanger Borough Council on December 13.
A decrease in the number of children means a decrease in the number of places
Forecasts indicate a further decline in the number of children. The slight increase in births this year has little impact on this. Today, Stavanger has almost 1200 fewer preschool children than in 2014. This is a development that will continue in the coming years: in 2025, demand is expected for 500-600 fewer places in kindergarten than now. The total demand will then be approximately 7000 places.
In the next preschool year 2022/23 there will be a demand for approx. 210 places less than this year.
Reducing the number of seats
The commune director therefore proposes a reduction of 210 places from August 2022. This is done mainly by reducing the number of places in kindergartens, without affecting the children who already take place.
Since the decline is so large and lengthy, it is still difficult to avoid decommissioning entire buildings.
In this situation, the head of the municipality proposes to close Roaldsøy Kindergarten and Hesby Kindergarten from August 2022. If the changes are approved on December 13, from August 2022 children will be offered places in other kindergartens.
