The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against any travel that is not strictly necessary to: Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The new travel advice was introduced as a result of the detection of a new infection variant (B.1.1.529) that was of concern. It has been detected in several South African countries. Following the recommendation of the health authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to discourage travel to these eight countries.
After the closure of the Global Travel Council on October 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now introducing country-specific travel advice. There is still a lot of uncertainty about the new virus variant. Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will revise the list of countries if the situation so requires. The Travel Council will make an ongoing assessment in consultation with health authorities.
Norwegian citizens living in these countries are encouraged to follow local infection control measures. They are also encouraged to follow the events in local and international media. Register on reiseregistring.no or in the app Reiseklar, if you want information from the Norwegian authorities.
