Parliament summed up the development of events in Poland. Many speakers called for action to halt the deviation from the rule of law and fundamental rights. In the debate, MEPs called on the Council, the Commission and EU Member States to intensify their efforts to halt the continued deterioration of the EU's Values ​​in Poland.

Majority Presidents in Parliament commented on the latest worrying developments. In particular to:

  • the judgment of the Polish Constitutional Court of November 24, which found parts of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) inconsistent with the Polish constitution, including Art. 6 on the right to a fair trial;
  • ban de facto abortion in place from October 2020. The current government proposal is to oblige doctors to report all pregnancies and miscarriages in a centralized register. This could take place as early as January 2022;
  • the issue of the so-called "LGBTQI free zones", which Parliament has long condemned; and
  • no progress on ongoing procedures Article 7 a failure of the Commission to act by activating the budget conditionality mechanism.

Others emphasized that the topics discussed fell within the exclusive competence of the state. They said that Poland's sovereignty should be respected, and the debate is another manifestation of politically motivated attacks on the Polish government. Recorded debate is available here.

The Constitutional Tribunal ruling on the application of the ECtHR in Poland.
