YouTube is encouraged to fight disinformation

Over 80 fact-checking organizations are joining forces to urge YouTube to step up its efforts to combat disinformation.

"Every day, we see YouTube as one of the most important channels of online disinformation worldwide." We read in a joint statement by organizations, including the Kenyan Africa Check and the US newspaper Washington Post.

Organizations believe that videos that contain incorrect information have ended up under YouTube radar. Especially in countries where English is not spoken.

- Our experiences in the field of fact-checking combined with scientific research tell us. That tagging verified content is more effective than deleting content.

YouTube spokeswoman Elena Hernandez defends the company's efforts in this area and says fact-checking is key, but only one piece in a big puzzle to prevent the spread of disinformation.
