Yesterday 14 February, Parliament celebrated the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the first euro notes and coins at the opening of its plenary session in Strasbourg.

Opening the ceremony, EP President Robert Metsola said that the euro was "truly one of the EU's greatest achievements, as demonstrated by the recent study Eurobarometer which shows that 78% of people think it is a "good thing".

“The euro is about European integration, unity, stability, identity and solidarity. It is in our pockets as a tangible success story, ”added Ms Metsola.

ECB President Christine Lagarde said: “The euro has simplified the lives of Europeans and has brought tangible economic benefits. It enabled trade to flourish, supported the free movement of people, goods and services. The introduction of this currency made it possible for citizens to work, study and travel in 19 Member States without having to change the currency. The introduction of the euro has united us across borders, languages and cultures. A common currency is more than just using the same means of payment; it's being part of a joint venture.

Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni said: “We are celebrating one of our most successful ventures. However, economic union and monetary policy must be completed by creating a banking union and Capital Markets Union and improving our economic governance. There is also the possibility of increasing the role of the euro.

The introduction of the euro was the best investment we could make to ensure a stable environment

Irene Tinagli, chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, praised the euro for its stabilizing role over the past two decades. “Without the euro, we would tell very different stories. The euro was the best investment we could make to ensure a stable environment. This investment allowed us to overcome serious difficulties. " Ms Tinagli also said that the euro could achieve its goals even more if Economic and Monetary Union were completed.
