Scandalous actions of Barnevernet

This Norwegian family has experienced a real drama. They started looking for help in 2015, reporting the case to Barnevernet. Since then, the problem has escalated and there have been unclear actions by both the Children's Welfare Office and the police. The case was publicized by the Norwegian activist Rune Fardal.

Norwegian family drama

It is 2015 when a complaint is received by Barnevernet. It concerns the father's behavior towards his daughters, who was supposed to take pornographic pictures of them and store them on his computer. Officials come to the twins' school with these pictures and ask directly, "Do these scenes take place in your house?" Since then, the problem has become more and more serious.

The police didn't find anything on the computer

Barnevernet officials informed the police in Drammen about the whole situation. The officers received a valid warrant to search the computer that belongs to the girls' father. However, they find nothing there and as it turns out later - the policemen probably helped get rid of these materials. After this fact comes to light, the police in Drammen ceases to deal with the case, and the investigation is delegated to the police in Tønsberg.

Scandalous actions of Barnevernet. The complaint was the beginning of the family's problems

Filing a complaint to Barnevernet also marked the beginning of her true drama. After a short time, this institution begins to receive anonymous denunciations not only of her, but also of her two daughters (aged 15 and 3). They were all considered fake news, but this did not prevent two officials - Anna Amundsen and Silje Elisabeth - from initiating proceedings against her mother. The only evidence in this case were anonymous denunciations, which, as it turned out, were sent by his father, his brother and friends.

The mother is summoned to Barnevernet for interrogation. During the meeting, he has the phone on, which records the entire course of the conversation. Despite unsuccessful attempts to accuse the mother and deprive her of parental rights, Anna Amundsen and Silje Elisabeth are still looking for new evidence of abnormalities in the family, and the mother is still the main accused. Meanwhile, a conversation leaks between officials in which they wonder if their actions have been detected.

Barnevernet persists

Today (August 9, 2018) a hearing is held in the District Court (norw. Fylkesnemnden). It concerns the removal of parental rights from the mother. Interestingly, the accuser is not only the father, but also the son who testified in favor of his mother two weeks ago. The reasons for the change of position are unknown, but according to Rune Fardal - he was probably bribed or intimidated by his father.

Scandalous actions of Barnevernet. The powerlessness of Norwegian institutions

The whole case casts a huge shadow on the actions of not only Barnevernet, but also of the police officers in Drammen. This is not the only such case in Norway. It is worth mentioning, for example, the case of a psychiatrist who sat on the committee in Barnevernet and decided from whom children were to be taken away. In April of this year, he was faced with a trial because he was accused of downloading and storing many thousands of photos of child pornography. The case was publicized by the BBC, and the documentary was released on August 4.

Barnevernet in the heat of criticism

We also recall that lawyers associated in the Polish organization Ordo Iuris have many reservations about Barnevernet's work. They are critical of the office's actions, especially in relation to Silje Garmo - a Norwegian woman who fled to Poland after a decision was made to withdraw her right to custody of her younger daughter. Not so long ago, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to grant her asylum. During a conference organized on this issue, members of Ordo Iuris assessed very negatively the activities of the Norwegian Children's Welfare Office. Critical opinions of the European Union and the United Nations were also referred to, which have many reservations about the practices applied by Barnevernet. What's more - it is likely that officials from this institution will face a Polish court for the first time because of exceeding their powers (read more on Ordo Iuris: >>> CLICK HERE <<).

What will happen next in this case?

New facts will be released only after today's court hearing. However, bearing in mind the current practice of the Children's Welfare Office and the course of the case to date, there may be legitimate concerns as to whether we will get a fair judgment. We stay in touch with Rune Fardal and we will definitely come back to the matter!
