Refugees arriving from Ukraine must be distributed among European countries. Norway must participate, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Støre met the press ahead of the digital summit with NATO heads of state and government on Friday to discuss the situation in Ukraine. He noted that many Ukrainian refugees had already arrived in Poland.

Støre said Norway would work with the EU on a joint solution to relocate refugees. It is very important that there are no unfair burdens for other countries.

- Norway needs to do its part, relying on sensible relocation between European countries, said Støre.

"Of course it depends on the situation on the ground," he said.

Norway will help both Ukraine and neighboring countries, which are hosting many people fleeing the hostilities. The government said that it had provided Ukraine with over NOK 200 million in aid and that, according to Støre, the government would consider increasing this amount.

I think it will affect Norwegian interests

The prime minister confirmed that Norway would join the sanctions introduced by the EU against Russia. He also believes that Norway may be hit by Russian retaliatory measures.
