The Police Immigration Unit (PU) notices an increasing influx of Ukrainian citizens. This applies to both those who want to seek (asylum) protection in Norway and those who need different information. One such piece of information is how long they can stay in Norway without applying for a special permit.

The udi.no website has published additional information for Ukrainian citizens on how to stay legally in Norway until further notice, even without applying for protection (asylum).

- Persons seeking protection and having to be accommodated are admitted to a refugee center. Such a place is the Nasjonalt ankomstsenter in Råde in Viken. Those who arrive in Norway at airports or border crossing points on land or at sea are sent to the center by the local police, where the PU registers them as asylum seekers - explains the leader of the Are Magnus Olsen section in the ID-ankomst section at PU.

Various routes

"Many of the Ukrainian citizens who have flown so far have flown, but some have also arrived in a different way," says Olsen.

Asylum seekers are subject to the normal asylum process.

The place of accommodation depends on the age and type of case.

We need more Ukrainian translators

Olsen says the PU is closely following further developments and has reviewed the PU's plans for increasing the number of asylum seekers.

To be better prepared for the increased influx of Ukrainian asylum seekers, Olsen encourages translators of the Ukrainian language to register.

- We are working with UDI to recruit more Ukrainian-speaking translators and we want them to the relevant candidates registered on the UDI website.

Contribution of volunteers

PU received many inquiries from organizations and individuals willing to contribute. Both PU and UDI encourages you to contact recognized aid organizations in for information on how to contribute.

- We also receive inquiries from people who plan to go to Poland to pick up people who have fled from Ukraine - says Olsen.

- Usually approved documents are required to enter Norway. It is also important to know who you are actually carrying on such a trip. Unfortunately, we must take into account the possibility that people with different goals. They will take the opportunity to go to Norway, also illegally, Olsen concludes.
