I inform the municipality of Bergen, Fr.about 40 percent refugees from Ukraine are children of preschool and school age. The municipality of Bergen has introduced school offers for children aged 6-16. Now, younger children will be given a place in kindergarten.

To make sure that everyone who wants one gets a place in a kindergarten, the city council will create a temporary day care offer. The temporary offer is valid until the children are given a place by a supplementary admission.

The most important task facing the commune

The refugee situation that emerged after the invasion of Ukraine is the most important task facing the municipality in the coming weeks and months. Bergen must be a safe haven for refugees, and children who come to Bergen must be safe.

- Those who come to our city now are in crisis and are in a completely unusual situation. We must do everything in our power to receive them in a good way. Offering a place in a kindergarten is a specific thing the municipality can do, says Linn Katrin Pilskog, who is the city councilor for kindergarten, school and sports.

Kindergarten contributes to normality

Incoming children may be in an extremely difficult situation and it will be necessary to create as normal as possible. The City Council will make it easier for children to play and meet other children. The City Council will therefore ensure that younger Ukrainian children can start kindergarten as soon as possible. The kindergarten is to take care of children's needs in terms of care and play, and is an important arena for the community.

The day-care offer will also be important to ease the burden on parents by giving them the opportunity to participate in Norwegian language teaching, activities under the auspices of voluntary organizations and, in the long run, to participate in working life.

Increased capacity in an open nursery

Parents decide if they want a place in kindergarten for their child. The City Council wants to make it easier for those who do not want a place in the kindergarten to take advantage of the offer open kindergarten . For many years, open kindergartens have been a valuable arena for community integration and are a meeting place for both children and adults.
