According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the abortion rate is now 9,8 per 1000 women. From 2021 to 2022, there was a ten percent increase in abortions. We are back at the same level as in 2019 before the pandemic, according to data from the Abortion Registry for 2021.

The number of abortions increased for the first time since 2008 and returned to pre-pandemic levels. This is according to new statistics from the Abortion Registry Norwegian Institute of Health Publicly published on March 8.

Increase in voluntary and tribunal abortions

In the years 2021-2022, there was an increase in both self-determination and judicial proceedings. In 2022, 11 abortions were performed against 967 in 10. That's an increase of 875 percent, which is close to pre-pandemic levels, when the number was 2021.

As the population has increased over the years, we need to look at the number per 1000 inhabitants aged 15-49. Then we will find real development. In the last four years for the first time in history this indicator dropped below ten per 1000 women. It is exactly 9,8 for those who had an abortion aged 15-49 in 2022.

Abortion numbers have returned to the same level we saw in 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic, says senior doctor Mette Løkeland-Stai at the Abortion Registry at the Institute of Public Health.
– It is too early to say whether the increase we see in 2022 is related to the end of the pandemic or whether there is a change in the trend. Only next year will we see whether the numbers will fall again and follow the trend of annual decline observed since 2008, whether they will continue to increase or if they will stabilize, says Mette Løkeland-Stai.

Increase in the number of terminations of pregnancies conducted as a result of court proceedings

Termination of pregnancy after the twelfth week must be dealt with by the courts. Those cases that are rejected by the main committee will automatically be referred to the appeals committee. In 2022, a total of 590 such cases were carried out in court proceedings.
“Most of the abortion cases brought before the courts have been decided on the basis of the risk of fetal damage, and this percentage is gradually increasing,” says Løkeland-Stai.

Is the increase a temporary effect of the end of the pandemic?

The chief medical officer says we still don't know if this increase will continue or if it's just a temporary effect of the end of the pandemic. Recently, there have been many reports in the media about the decline in the use of hormonal contraception among young people. The Association of Pharmacists has confirmed that this rate has fallen. Decreased use of hormonal contraception is often associated with increased abortion rates.

“Research shows that using long-acting contraception, such as the contraceptive stick and coil, is the type of contraception that prevents unwanted pregnancy to the greatest extent,” says Løkeland-Stai.
Eight out of ten abortions are performed before the 9th week of pregnancy, and nine out of ten abortions are performed with medication.
