Drammen Municipality has announced that from June 21, the inter-municipal Drammen Port Authority (DIH) will cease to exist and will be transformed into a public limited company called Drammen Havn AS. At the foundation document signing ceremony on Wednesday, Mayors Drammen, Lier and Asker expressed their satisfaction with the change.

Monica Myrvold Berg, Mayor of Drammen, stressed that the municipalities of Asker, Lier and Drammen are very satisfied with the existence of a central and dynamic port. It plays a key role both at the national level and for the local business community.

Together with the mayors of Lier - Gunn Cecilie Ringdal and Asker - Lene Conradi, Monica Myrvold Berg officially signed the founding documents for the newly established company Drammen Havn AS.

Changed company form

Drammen Havn was originally a company wholly owned by the municipality of Drammen. In 1985, the five municipalities surrounding the then Drammensfjord (Svelvik, Drammen, Lier, Røyken and Hurum) merged to form the inter-municipal port authority of the Drammen region. Subsequently, the Local Government Act has been amended several times, most recently in 2020. This also meant that municipalities across the country had to change the legal form of many inter-communal companies. In most cases, this applies to conversion into a limited liability company (under the Companies Act) or an inter-municipal company (under the Inter-Municipality Act).

Currently, Drammen Havn AS is owned by Drammen, Lier and Asker:

  • Drammen 64% (previously Drammen 55%, Svelvik 9%)
  • Lier 18%
  • Asker 18% (Røyken 9%, Hurum 9%)

The transition to AS marks a new era for the port and its future development.

– We are now entering a new phase of the port's development, which gives us new opportunities. Thanks to the new company form, we will be actively working to achieve several goals related to our strategic plan. As well as ensuring the continued growth and development of the Drammen Havn cargo hub, says Arne Fosen, Director of the Port of Drammen Havn.

– The transition to AS will provide the port with the necessary flexibility and freedom of action to attract capital. A separate inter-communal company will also be established, which, in accordance with the Act on ports and waters, will deal with the official duties of the owners of municipalities in accordance with the Act on ports and waters, adds Fosen.

This company is called Drammen Havn Farvannsforvaltning IKS and is owned by Lier (21%) and Drammen (79%).

Major investments have already been made

Drammen Port's 2040 strategic plan emphasizes several important areas. To work towards sustainable development and zero emissions, modernize and develop solid infrastructure, implement new green technologies and promote digitalization and innovation in port operations. Major investments have already been made in new shore facilities, onshore electricity facilities and new port areas. Work on new infrastructure will also be actively carried out in the future. Also new, sustainable areas solutions and ensuring modern and continued good port operations.

“The Port of Drammen needs to continue to grow to play a key role in several important and sustainable flows of goods. The transition to AS is an important step on the road, says Ann Christin Andersen, CEO of Drammen Havn AS.
