Attention! SMS fraud attempts are underway! Statens vegvesen once again reminds us of the growing threat. Fraudsters impersonate various institutions, such as the post office, police or tax office. Be alert and careful when answering calls from unknown numbers and responding to text messages.

Don't open fake SMS messages from Statens vegvesen

There is an ongoing SMS fraud attempt in which the sender impersonates Statens vegvesen (Norwegian Public Roads Administration). The SMS will inform you that you have an overdue invoice from AutoPASS - we read in the announcement from Statnens vegvesen.

– If you receive an SMS like the one in the photo, the SMS is fake. This is a scam and you must not open the link, says Ole Grundetjern, who is head of digital security at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is increasingly being used as a sender of text messages and emails in fraud attempts.

Phishing via SMS, the so-called SMiShing is becoming more and more common. These messages often contain a link to websitesj, where fraudsters try to obtain private information such as passwords, payment card information and personal data.

SMS fraud attempts are ongoing. What can you do

Unfortunately, there is little the Norwegian Public Roads Administration can do to stop criminals from impersonating this institution.
SMS messages from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration regarding your vehicle will never contain a link.

– SMS messages from us containing links always lead to our website and never point to external entities, as in the example above, says Grundetjern.

Seek help!

However, if you were unlucky enough to open the link, the owner of the phone should immediately contact the police and bank to report the incident and ask for help in the fight against identity theft.

To increase security, please change your password all services and websites visited via mobile phone.
