Almost doubling the number of pensioners with low pensions as a result of short-term residence in Norway

In June 2022, 31 pensioners living in Norway received a reduced pension. The reason for this is the shorter period of living and working in Norway. This is almost twice as many as ten years ago.

In June 2022, these pensioners received on average NOK 14 monthly pension. It is about 40 percent lower than the average pension for people who have lived in Norway all their lives.

The pension is calculated on the basis of, among other things, how long you have lived in Norway from the age of 16 until the age of 66. It's called period social security and is a maximum of 40 years. People with a shortened social security period will receive a reduced pension. Since 2012, the number in this group has increased by 92%.

- A shortened period of social insurance means a reduction in part of the pension. Due to the short period of residence, this group also usually has fewer years of work in Norway than those who have lived here all their lives. This means that the earnings-related part of the pension will also be lower, explains Ole Christian Lien, director of the NAV department.

A wide range of paid benefits

There is a wide range in the amount an individual receives from a pension. 10 percent with the lowest payment of the benefit pension received NOK 4900 or less in June. Accordingly, the top 10 percent received NOK 24 or more in June.

People who have received a low pension as a result of a short period of residence, may be entitled to supplementary benefits in addition to retirement.

On average, 26 years of social insurance

Among retirees in Norway with a shortened insurance period social insurance in June 2022, the average social insurance period was 26 years. Only 10 percent was supposed to district social security 38 or 39 years old.

"We can see that more and more people have stayed or worked in several countries during their careers," says Lien.

People who have worked in other countries may be entitled to a pension from these countries.

- Statistics from the Swedish Pensions Authority show that in June 2022 12 people with a Norwegian bank account received a pension or survivor's pension from Sweden, says Lien.

8 out of 10 retirees were born in other countries

81 per cent of pensioners in Norway with shortened social security were born in other countries or are registered in an unknown country of birth. The remaining 19 percent were born in Norway but lived abroad for part of their lives. Most were born in Sweden (2200), followed by Poland (1600), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1600) and Denmark (1500).

There is also a large increase among retirees living abroad

As of June 2022, 53 retirees lived abroad. Since 100, this number has increased by 2012 percent.

- Again in this group, many have cut their social security periods, including foreign-born people who worked in Norway for several years and then moved to their home country, says Lien. But there are also Norwegians in this group who went abroad after their professional career in Norway. This is a group with no short-term social security, Lien explains.

There are currently 1 pensioners in Norway

At the end of June 2022, 1 people were receiving pensions. There are 009 more retirees than in June 700. The increase from 17 to 300 is 2021%. It is expected that in 2021 the number of retirees will exceed 2022 million.
