Winter is behind us, but spring is a time of renovations. During this period, it is worth considering the installation of snow protection systems on roofs. They protect against the sliding of snow from the roofing, which can cause costly damage. There are several types of products on the market that perform protective functions.

Dangerous beauty

The snow on the roof slopes is a beautiful sight, often immortalized on postcards. However, over time, it becomes dangerous not only to humans, but to everything in the immediate vicinity of the house. This problem concerns not only roofs with large angles of intensity, but also those that are flatter. Therefore, it is recommended that in areas with heavy snowfall, snow protection systems should be installed in all buildings.

Consequences of residual snow

Long remaining snow on the roof alternately melts and freezes again, which causes the formation of a block of ice. If such a layer begins to slide, it is easy to imagine the damage that can be caused, for example, to a car that is standing in the driveway at that time. If a person is in the area where such snow falls, he may suffer damage to health and even life.

The typical damage caused by a sliding ice block includes the following:

  • gutters tearing off or deformed
  • damage to the roofing material
  • in rare cases, damage to the roof truss

How to protect yourself from this?

Bearing in mind the above risks, manufacturers of roof accessories have introduced various types of anti-snow systems to their offer. The most frequently used are: snow fences, pipe systems, snow planks, snow guards and shingles stoppers. There are also system tiles, which are adapted to the installation of snow protection devices after the roof is put into use.

How to export building materials from Poland to Norway?

Snow hurdles

The most universal solution are snow fences. They can be installed on the gables covered with ceramic or cement tiles, as well as with metal tiles. It is a product resistant to weather conditions. This is due to the fact that it is manufactured using hot-dip galvanized steel and is additionally subjected to powder coating.

Pipe systems

It is a type of snow fences. They are mounted on roofs made of sheet metal, and in the case of flat sheets, the assembly consists in attaching clamps to standing seams. Pipe systems are made of steel with a diameter of approx. 35 mm, and for their production copper, aluminum or galvanized steel are used.

Snow logs

This solution is recommended wherever there is a risk of snow falling on traffic routes. The logs have a cross-section of several centimeters, thanks to which it is able to effectively prevent snow from falling from the roof. They are mounted on hooks that are attached to the roof truss.

Snow catchers

Due to the way they work, they are called snow rippers. All because they are designed to separate the sliding mass into smaller and lighter parts. These systems are often used as a supplement to snow fences as they prevent damage and deformation. Snow catchers are especially recommended in situations where the roof surface exceeds 3 meters.

What about bitumen roofs?

The above solution is not suitable for installation on shingled roofs. In this case, specially designed stoppers are used. The principle of their operation is similar to that of snow fences. They are nailed to the rigid roof sheathing in order to make the strip-covered roofs.

System tiles

When deciding to use snow protection, it is worth purchasing and installing system tiles. For example, they have factory built-in hooks for the installation of fences. There are also roof tiles intended for installation with logs.

What to choose?

The variety of snow protection systems on offer can be a headache. The materials chosen must be carefully considered. Factors to consider include price, quality, functionality and many more elements that are worth considering. However, if you have any problems making a decision or doubts about which solution to choose, it is worth contacting specialists. These include, among others: Skandpol from Rumia. In addition to mediation and advice on the purchase of snow protection systems, they also offer comprehensive services export service to Norway and other countries located beyond Poland's borders.
