Record heat in Norway affects not only people. Also, reindeer are looking to escape from the scorching sun. Some of them find relief in road tunnels, which causes a huge threat to drivers. While no serious accident involving these animals has been reported so far, Norwegian authorities are cautioning drivers to be especially vigilant in shaded areas.

Record heat in Norway is bothering animals

"It's been very hot weeks in northern Norway," Tore Lysberg of the Norwegian Road Administration tells AFP. "Animals are looking for colder places to shelter from the sun." This applies to both reindeer and sheep. They find a respite in road tunnels and other shaded places.

This is nothing new

This phenomenon is nothing new. However, it can increase in intensity considering record heat in Norway. The problem especially affects northern areas, where temperatures of close to 32 degrees Celsius are extremely rare. According to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, there have already been 12 nights in the north of the country that can be classified as "tropical". This is how we define a situation in which the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees Celsius after sunset.

Authorities sound the alarm: stay alert!

According to the Norwegian Road Administration, no serious accidents involving reindeer have been reported so far. The current record heat in Norway, however, poses new challenges for drivers, who must be especially vigilant when driving through tunnels or driving through other shaded areas. There are animals that are looking for a break from the scorching sun. This poses a serious threat - ultimately a collision with an adult reindeer can be serious in its consequences for the car and drivers.

It will be safer soon

Record heat in Norway is set to end soon. The temperatures will thus return to standard levels, which should result in fewer animals hiding in the tunnels. For now, it is worth being particularly careful in such places to avoid a more serious accident.
