This year's drought in Norway is the worst that has hit this country in recent years. The estimated damage amounts to billions of NOK. Farmers are not satisfied with the proposed aid package by the government, which, however, wants to wait until the harvest to propose other solutions to the problem.

Drought in Norway - billions in losses

As reported by the portal Nations, this year's drought in Norway caused estimated losses of NOK 5,5 billion. This is due to the difference between the earnings that farms earned last year and the expected profits from this year's crops. So far, farmers have earned an average of NOK 15,5 billion per year, and estimates for this year are NOK 10,3 billion.

The aid package is not enough

The Norwegian government has offered farmers NOK 1,1 billion in compensation. However, these are preliminary proposals, because in the opinion of the Minister of Agriculture - the final proposals should be postponed until the crops are harvested. There is also a will on the part of the authorities to renegotiate the proposed terms, but increasing the amount of compensation is currently not considered.

We are furious

The government's actions do not like Merete Furuberg from the Norwegian Association of Small and Medium-sized Farmers. In an interview with Nations admits that he cannot understand why government representatives do not realize the gravity of the crisis. She also raised the issue of renegotiating the initial compensation proposal - "I support the idea of renewing talks and changing the conditions of support for farmers," she says in an interview with NRK.no - "However, the government must be aware that the drought in Norway affects not hundreds, but thousands farmers!” – he adds.

Drought in Norway - everyone will feel the effects

This year's drought in Norway is the most extreme in many years. Despite the partial actions of the Norwegian government, it has not been possible to effectively counter its consequences. Merete Furuberg claims that extreme conditions require exceptional measures, and these were missing from the Ministry and the government. If there is no agreement between the authorities and farmers, we will all feel the effects of the drought. The prices of food, fruit and related products will increase, and these are the most frequently purchased commodities on the market.
