29 fatal accidents at work

As every year, the Labor Inspection Office presented preliminary data on the number of fatal accidents at work. The year 2018 brought 29 of them, which means that there were 2 more than in 2017 and 4 more than in 2016. However, UIP believes that the number of deaths in the workplace is stabilizing. Ten years ago, there were on average 41 of them a year.

Which industries are the most dangerous?

Traditionally, the list also includes industries that, according to data, are the most dangerous for employees. These include construction, agriculture, industry, transport and forestry. Although many accidents take place in construction, most deaths are recorded in industry - in 2018 alone, there were as many as 6 of them. The industry records a lot of injuries and accidents related to the maintenance of machines and vehicles. As a result of these data, the Office Labor Inspectorate intends to invest a lot of work in the industrial sector this year. Their main goal is to increase unannounced surveillance.

Construction industry

The construction industry is one of the sectors most exposed to accidents among employees, as evidenced by numerous deaths. The year 2018 saw historically fewer such accidents, only 4. As a reminder, it should be added that in 2017 there were 7 such accidents and in 2016 eight. Why such improvement? Many companies are trying to increase the safety of their employees, but there is still much to do.

Other sectors

Other sectors, i.e. agriculture, fishing, forestry and transport, recorded further fatal accidents in 2018. Deaths related to fishing and vessel operation are not taken into account because they are subject to other authorities. Five recorded accidents in agriculture were related to the use of workers' vehicles. Three of the five people who died were over 67 years old. For agriculture, forestry and fishing, this means an increase in numbers fatal accidents because in 2017 there were three of them and in 3 four. Five transport fatalities in 2016 show that this number has remained at the same level in recent years.

All men

The 29 fatal accidents that occurred in Norway in 2018 in workplaces were accidents involving only men. Last year was the first in five years in which no women have died as a result of an accident at work.
