We are like prisoners during this time because it is really hard to get out of the house. It is not difficult to see when the plague "tunnel”Comes. This usually happens in June of each year and takes about 2-3 weeks. These inconspicuous defects leave behind bloody and swollen wounds on the skin. It is then difficult for children to work or play outdoors.

These little flying "vampires" are literally everywhere and they attack animals as well.

Tuneflue (scientific name Simulium truncatum) is a blood sucking species. It can be found all over Norway, but was called "tuneflue". It is most commonly found in the area of the former Tune Commune which is now part of Sarpsborg Commune. Tuneflua has existed in this area since human settlement appeared here. The stock size varies considerably from year to year, partly because of natural fluctuations and partly because the water level in Ågårdselva is different.

Tuneflua may appear locally in large numbers over a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

It is mainly found in the Sarpsborg region, but adult flies can fly 10-15 km and are also found in nearby municipalities. Among others, such as Våler or Skiptvet. The eggs of these flying leeches are found in clusters, it is even up to half a billion eggs per square meter ranging from half to one and a half meters above the water. The number of these flies is significant has increased since the Glomma River was regulated.

Previously, the waterline varied greatly throughout the year and the eggs were often washed with water or dried. In 1954, the water level in the Glomma River between Vamma and Sarpsfossen rose from 23,2 meters to 24,1 meters above sea level. This has contributed to the creation of new hatching areas at an appropriate distance from the water. There is an organization called "Friends of Tuneflua" that insists firmly and believes that "tuneflua" is important to the ecosystem, but reports say that none of its members live in the area and are not exposed to encountering it.

Appropriate dress

Remember that when the tuneflua arrives, we must make sure that the children are properly dressed. Places where the skin is not covered should be sprayed with a repellent agent. Some people use scented bracelets to repel these fluff. A fluff bite is not dangerous, but it can cause an allergic reaction with fever and swelling. There is nothing to hide, swarms of "Tuneflua" are a plague and a great nuisance. Will there be any project that will give hope that we can at least significantly reduce this annual plague? For now, one can only hope that there will be fewer of them this year.

The species is widespread throughout Scandinavia. It feeds by sucking blood from humans and other mammals. The problem with the fly is not that it is more poisonous or bloodthirsty than other nodular species. The main problem is that it occurs in large numbers in densely populated areas.
