High taxi fares are the bane of the inhabitants of many Norwegian cities. It is not surprising then that in larger cities, the practice of providing coach services by strangers for money has developed. Of course, it is by no means legal and it is this phenomenon that the Norwegian police have announced that they will fight. The passenger knows the name of the driver as he introduces himself first. However, he stipulates that in the event of a control or arrest by the police, the passenger is to say that he is a good friend of the driver and that the driver offered him a lift.
