The government decided to introduce decisive measures in several municipalities of Østfold as a result of the spread of the mutant virus epidemic.

As a result of the detection of an outbreak of a mutant British virus in Halden, strong measures are being taken in several municipalities.

Health Minister Bent Høie said in a press conference on Sunday night that Halden and Sarpsborg were added to the "ring 1" list of municipalities with the strictest measures.

Fredrikstad and Hvaler now pass under "ring 2", which has the second most stringent measures.

The measures take effect from midnight and run until 10 February.

“In our opinion, this balances well with infection control considerations and other social needs. The municipality of Fredrikstad wanted to be covered by national legislation, says Mayor Jon-Ivar Nygård in press release on the website of the municipality on Sunday evening.

"We understand this is happening suddenly, but we need to act quickly to try to suppress the more infectious variant of the virus," says Mayor Sindre Martinsen-Evje in Sarpsborg Municipality.

A mutant British virus has been detected in several municipalities of Østfold. The epidemic is linked to the Halden hockey event last weekend.

In collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health, the Halden municipality head has decided that kindergartens and primary schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday next week.

City officials report that children with parents in critical social functions and vulnerable children will receive support during confinement.

Further clarifications and information will follow in the next two days.
