If you are not allowed to work in Norway due to an entry ban during the pandemic, you may be reimbursed for some of the lost income. The program is valid from January 29 and as long as the entry ban lasts.

Who can get compensation?

  • You cannot come to work in Norway due to an entry ban, and you will therefore lose your wages (pensionable income on which you pay tax).
  • You are an EEA national (including Switzerland) or live in another country that has a social security agreement with Norway (Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands or Austria) and live in an EEA country. British nationals are covered by a separation agreement with Norway. Read about social security contracts.
  • You have a Norwegian personal number or a D number.
  • You live outside of Norway. This means that you do not have an address in Norway.
  • You were employed and started working in Norway from January 29, 2021.
  • You worked for an employer or received income from NAV for four weeks prior to the date you made your claim.

Who is not compensated?

  • If you are dismissed and receiving unemployment benefit, you are not entitled to unemployment benefit.
  • You will not receive any compensation if you live in Norway. Then you have the right to travel to Norway
  • You will not receive any compensation if you are a Norwegian citizen. Then you have the right to enter Norway.
  • If you have income from another job, you will not be compensated for Income Days. The same is true if you receive payments from the authorities in your country of residence.

If you have deliberately violated national travel advice, you may be denied compensation. National authorities advise against traveling abroad that is not strictly necessary. Under this scheme, traveling home to your own place of residence will be considered an absolute necessity and therefore entitling you to compensation. NAV will use the employer's assessment as a basis.

NAV will then conduct inspections to prevent abuse of the program.

How much can you get?

You get 70% of the Illness Benefit you would get if you were sick, but not more than 70% of six times the National Insurance Basic Amount (6G). This means you can receive a maximum of NOK 35 per month.

If you receive different NAV benefits, such as 50% sick pay or parental benefit, you will be compensated for the part you should have worked.

 How to get compensation?

Your employer is required to pay you the money to which you are entitled.

If your employer is not paying your compensation as it should, you can submit a claim yourself:

Compensation claim

If you took holiday after January 29, you can agree with your employer that the holiday will be converted into working days for which you can be compensated. You have no right to do so, the employer decides.

. Self-employed and freelancers

The program applies to employees only, not freelancers and the self-employed. They can apply for compensation for the self-employed and freelancers.
