– We will prepare Norway for the refugee crisis, which may be very large and demanding. That's why the government now ensures that asylum seekers can register with several places in Norway. This will reduce pressure on the national center in Råde and make it easier for Ukrainians who are already in others to register places in Norway, says Emilie Enger Mehl, Minister of Justice and Crisis Management.

The government strengthens the Police Immigration Unit (PU)

In principle, all asylum seekers who come to Norway must register with the national center in Råde. The government is now taking further action, including strengthening the Police Immigration Unit (UU) with around 100 posts, further enhancing the capacity of the Råde police force. The PU also expanded its capacity to deal with asylum seekers before registering with Scandic Helsfyr.

- The police will initially register asylum seekers at several locations in eight police districts - Agder, Sør-Vest, Vest, Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. The police will need some time to prepare for this. Therefore, registration will be available from Wednesday, March 16 at 08.00 to ensure proper operation nationwide, says Mehl.

The other districts (Oslo, Øst, Sør-Øst and Innlandet) will offer the same services through the center in Råde.

Norwegian authorities need control over who is in the country

- I would like to emphasize that it is important for those who come to Norway or are already here to register. This has two sides - first, that the Norwegian authorities need control over who is in the country. Second, that people have to register to get a temporary social security number, a so-called D number, to access services, says the Minister of Justice.

Ukrainians with a biometric passport can stay in Norway for 90 days without a visa. During this period, they can independently stay on a tourist visa. However, they have to register if they wish to access further information from the authorities.
