MENTAL HEALTH AND THE USE OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS WITH IMMIGRANT ORIGINS

I am asking you to participate in a research project on young adults with immigrant backgrounds and their use of mental health services. The purpose of this letter is to provide information about the study so that you can make an informed decision about participating in the project.
My name is Karoline Ekeberg and I am the project manager. I am a trained nurse. I am currently a PhD student at Oslo Metropolitan University. The aim of the project is to broaden knowledge about the experiences of people from immigrant backgrounds with institutions providing mental health services.
I would like to interview people aged 20-40 from Polish, Somali, Iranian and Pakistani backgrounds. For this reason, I am asking you to participate in the study.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION IN A PROJECT MEAN?

The interview will last approximately 1 hour. It can be conducted in Norwegian or English, or if necessary with the help of a qualified interpreter. The interview can take place at my place of work in the center of Oslo or we can agree another place that is convenient for you. Travel expenses will be covered if necessary.
During the interview, I can, for example, ask you what made you come into contact with mental health services and what your treatment experience is. I would also like to ask you how easy or difficult it was for you to get help. The interviews will be recorded, otherwise I won't be able to remember everything that was said. Only me, as project manager, will have access to the recordings.

Certain information about you will be collected and recorded during the interview. All collected information is confidential and available only to the project manager. The recordings will be stored on a secure server belonging to Oslo Metropolitan University. Access to the audio recordings will be password protected.
If the test results are published, it will not be possible to identify you from the information provided during the interview. Personal data such as name, e-mail address or telephone number will not be used. Information such as gender, age and country of origin may be used in publications, but in a way that prevents identification of the interviewee.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES

While your participation in the research is unlikely to bring you any direct benefit, the aim of the research is to use the results to evaluate the services provided to people with an immigrant background by mental health institutions. In this way, you will help us gain knowledge of an important area of healthcare, which may later benefit service users.
While I would like the interview to be a positive experience for you, some topics may be perceived as difficult. You decide which questions to answer. If something is particularly difficult for you, we may move on to another topic or end the interview. It is important that you know that it is possible to withdraw from the interview both before it starts and during it.

VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION AND THE POSSIBILITY OF WITHDRAWING CONSENT

Participation in the project is voluntary. If you want to participate, please sign the Declaration of Consent on the last page. You can withdraw your consent at any time and without giving any reason. There are no consequences for participating in this project if you are currently receiving mental health care, nor will it have any consequences for your future treatment. I, the interviewer, have a duty of confidentiality, and if you use the services of a therapist, he will not receive any information about the content of the interview.

You have the right to access recorded information about yourself and the right to correct any errors in the recorded information. You also have the right to access security measures when processing information. All information will be processed without disclosing your name, birth number or other personally identifiable information. The code will link you with information about you through a list of names. Only Karoline Ekeberg has access to this list. The expected end date for the project is 31.12.21/XNUMX/XNUMX and all audio recordings will be deleted by then. All data will be anonymized at the end of the project and the list of names will be removed.
