The government wants foreigners who have a residence permit or the right to stay in Norway for more than three months to be entitled to a Norwegian identity card (ID-kort). The Ministry of Justice and Crisis Preparedness therefore presents for consultation the proposed new rules in the provisions on passports and identity cards.
- Many foreigners living in Norway require an identity certificate. It is a document that confirms their Norwegian birth or a d-number (temporary identification number) in the National Registry. They will be able to easily and safely identify themselves with their ID cards. By extending the ID card system to foreigners, we are also contributing to the dissemination of the Unified Norwegian ID card. Such proof would apply to all areas of society, said Secretary of State Erik Idsøe at the Ministry of Justice and Crisis Management.
ID card without the right to travel
The general conditions for issuing an ID card without the right to travel will also apply to foreigners. However, all this with the necessary adjustments, including documentation and identity verification requirements.
The consultation deadline is June 3, 2022.
