After the autumn elections, VAT may appear on electric cars for the first time in Norway. Norway's largest importer, Harald A. Møller AS, believes this could create serious problems for the ambition that only new, emission-free passenger cars have in the country from 2025. At the same time, many doubt politicians' goals regarding electric cars.

In recent years electric cars have seen growth in the Norwegian market. In 2021, a new record is being sought: with an approximately 65% share of electric cars in the new car market.

But at the same time, there is uncertainty about the continuation. If there is a change of government after the autumn elections, there are many indications that for the first time we will receive VAT on electric cars. One of those who are very skeptical about this is Norway's largest car importer Harald A. Møller AS.

Electric car sales in Norway

There is a fear that the incentives for using electric cars after the elections. It can be crucial for sales electric cars in Norway.

We are working on a completely green car market in 2025 and are already aiming to sell our brands 85-90 percent pure electric cars. However, we are concerned that the lack of political will will slow development. Some parties are departing from the 2025 target, while the Red and Greens plan to introduce VAT. We believe it could be a major obstacle on the way to 2025, says Ulf Tore Hekneby, CEO of Harald A. Møller AS.

No faith in politicians

They are representatives of the brands Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, Skoda, Cupra and Seat in Norway.

- Now electric car models come in several segments and price ranges. It is very important that the most important stimuli can act in the phase we are entering. It would be a great paradox if a red-green government with great ambitions in both district and environmental policy were to shut down the development of electric cars. Hekneby says in a press release.

At the same time as electric car sales accelerated in Norway. Society's faith in politicians' goals to sell only electric cars in 2025 remains stable. When a similar study was conducted in 2019, 72,9 percent respondents answered "no" to questions about whether they believed in politicians' goals. In this year's survey, 72 percent answered the same way.
