Retail sales drop for the third consecutive month

From July to August 2021, retail trade turnover decreased by as much as 3,8%. The main reason is the big decline in the food industry.

The decline in trading volume is based on seasonally adjusted data and is the largest decline in the index since December 2020, according to the Norwegian Statistical Office (SSB).

– Changes in trading patterns Norwegians led to large effects in seasonally adjusted data. At this time, retail trade volumes are still well above pre-pandemic levels. As society now fully opens up, we expect some of these changes to be reversed, says principal consultant Marie Skjeldås at Statistics Norway.

Retail sales drop. Food trade is declining

The food industry has taken note decrease in sales volume a seasonally adjusted 5,8 percent from July to August.

The industry is responsible for about 39 percent. turnover in retail trade.

During the pandemic, the food industry traded at a much higher level than before, with a peak in July 2020.

- The decline in grocery store sales is now likely to be related to the reopening of society. This means that more and more people eat out in restaurants and canteens. Also, it's easier to cross the border into Sweden to do your shopping, says lead consultant Marie Skjeldås at Statistics Norway.

Fuel sales also lowered the overall ratio in August, with sales volumes dropping 4,7%. from July to August. Rising prices and the growing share of electric cars are contributing to a decline in demand.

Clothing sales are growing

However, sales of clothing increased. NHO Service og Handel is satisfied.

- In the clothing industry, sales finally gained momentum again. After a long period of time in which the industry has been limping, the Norwegians are now ready to replace sweatpants with chic clothes and the latest news of the season, says retail director Linda Vist.
