The ongoing drought in Norway has increasingly serious consequences. Agricultural losses have already been estimated at NOK 5,5 billion. It turns out that animal breeders have a problem with feeding them. As reported by NRK.no - there have been at least two cases of slaughtering horses only in Sørlandet itself. Other breeders of these animals are also planning to take similar steps.

There has never been such a crisis yet

– In recent months, many horse breeders have contacted me, who don't know how to feed their animals – says Jens Eide, owner of a slaughterhouse in Lillesand – The ongoing drought has caused problems with access to feed. That's why breeders who send their horses to the slaughterhouse earlier than planned contact me. It is hard and demanding for them, but they were forced to make this decision. All because of the ongoing drought and the resulting shortage of food for farm animals, he adds in an interview with NRK.no.

There is no feed

An adult healthy horse needs to provide him with about 10 kg of feed per day. Currently, however, suppliers are not able to meet the requirements set by breeders. Problems started to appear in May. According to Linn Elisabeth Eidsaa, director of the "Epona" Riding School in Kristiansand, its feed supplier had problems with food supplies at that time. The biggest concern right now is whether she will find enough food for all 40 horses in her care.

Eidsaa in an interview with NRK.no admitted that she noticed how many horses have been put up for sale recently. He also understands breeders who made the difficult decision to slaughter animals. The drought in Norway caused a lot of damage and caused problems with ensuring the food supply. It also contributed to the dynamic increase in feed prices. Not all are able to meet these challenges. This is why they decide to take such drastic steps.
