According to the Norwegian Statistical Office (Norwegian SSB), last month food prices increased by 3,8%. It is also more expensive for the same period in 2017, with increases of 3% in the period July 2017 - July 2018. This had a significant impact on raising overall prices in Norway, with the rate being 0,7%.
All groceries became more expensive
According to the SSB report, the price increases applied to all food products. Prices for milk, meat, cheese and eggs, as well as fruit and vegetables went up. The highest increase in prices was recorded in the assortment of Norwegian farmers - on average by 3,5%. In the case of imported fruit and vegetables, this increase was 2,9%.

There have been no such increases since 2016
Food prices started to increase slightly just after Easter - but from March to June the increase remained at 1%. The drastic increases were influenced, among others, by: negotiated target rates with agricultural communities, which entered into force on July 1 this year. The ongoing drought is also important as a result of which farmers suffered losses initially estimated at NOK 5,5 billion. Unless an agreement is reached on the aid package for the agricultural sector, even higher increases should be expected in the coming months.

Electricity prices are also going up
According to the information from the portal TwójNorwegia.no, electricity prices in Norway also soared. From January to June, the increase was almost 60%, while compared to the previous month, the price of electricity increased by an additional 6,2%. This is due to several factors - mainly the dwindling water resources and too high exports of electricity.

SSB also informs that not all products have increased in price recently. A large drop in prices was recorded, among others in the case of clothing - from June to July they decreased by 6,8%.

The increases were predictable
According to the assurances of Ingvill Størksen from Vike Grocery, the increases in food prices were predictable. They have been at a low level for a long time. In her opinion, two dates are key when it comes to food prices - February 1 and July 1. The increases usually occur in the summer.
