Norway-3,8 billion on 5G frequency

Telenor, Telia, Ice and Altibox secured a seat on the new 5G network for a total price of NOK 3,9 billion after the state conducted an access auction.

The four winning companies together bought the entire so-called volume of spectrum that the government had put up for sale. While Ice Communication pays just over 500 million for its stake, Telenor is the company that needs to invest the most. They have to pay as much as 1,4 billion for their much larger part of the network.

The companies have agreed to expand so that broadband internet with a capacity of at least 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) can be offered in the regions to both households and businesses. Three companies received a discount of NOK 480 million for the rapid expansion of broadband.

– Thousands of households and businesses in areas with weak commercial development bases will now be able to get a much better deal thanks to a record government investment of almost half a billion crowns – says Minister for District and Digital Affairs Linda Hofstad Helleland.

The starting price for the entire frequency range was set at NOK 1,4 billion in advance. However, after an auction with 33 bidding rounds, the total price was as high as 3,9 billion
