Norway's glaciers are shrinking fast. The Styggedalsbreen Glacier in Hurrungane has retreated 37 meters from last fall, the largest annual change since measurements began.
Haugabreen in Jostedalsbreen National Park has been under investigation since 2013 and since then the glacier has retreated 84 meters. From last year to this year, the retraction is five meters.
The Nigardsbreen, also the glacial arm of the Jostedalsbreen, has receded 39 meters from last year. The drop in 2001–2011 was 138 meters, while in 2011-2021 it was as much as 480 meters.
Other glaciers, such as the Styggedalsbreen glacier in Hurrungane, have a correspondingly large decline. The glacier has retreated 37 meters since last fall - the largest annual change since measurements began in 1901.
Glacier measurements are carried out under the auspices of the Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE).
The events in Norway, in turn, are in line with the global trend. Glaciers are melting and retreating around the world, from the Arctic to the Alps, the Andes, the Himalayas and western Antarctica.
