The American medical team managed to connect a pig's kidney with a human. The transplant one of the surgeons involved describes as a "possible miracle". The operation was carried out on September 25, after the family of a dead-brain person who was connected to a breathing apparatus accepted the approval of the family. A kidney from a genetically modified pig was connected to the blood vessels on one of the man's legs so that doctors could monitor the function of the new organ.

The experiment lasted two days. The kidney was then disconnected and the man died.

"The kidney did what it was supposed to do, which was removing waste products and producing urine," said Robert Montgomery, AFP. He is the head of the Transplant Institute at New York University Lagone. Most importantly, the kidney was able to lower creatinine levels, a key indicator of kidney function. This was very high in the patient before the experiment.

Montgomery conducted a two-hour operation with several colleagues. Previous experiments have shown that pig kidneys function in non-human primates. This is the first time a connection has been made with a human being. A pig comes from a herd that has been genetically engineered to suppress a gene that produces a special sugar that would otherwise trigger a strong immune response and be rejected by humans.
