While Tromsø has already decided to introduce passports locally, Bergen and Trondheim are considering doing the same.

The government released the opportunities on Friday for municipalities to use the vaccination passport.

- We are in the process of creating a regulation that allows municipalities to use the coronavirus certificate locally. This means that, for example, Tromsø, where there is now a lot of infection, may be using the certificate to preserve party offers. Which could otherwise be closed or restricted. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said at his first press conference on the coronavirus on Friday.

Tromsø Municipality intends to do so as soon as possible, Mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen (Labor).

- We will introduce it on Tuesday next week at the latest.

If it is created for this purpose, it is worth using it at cultural events, concerts, conferences, during Christmas meetings and in general in life.

Inquiry from municipalities and business

The Minister of Health and Healthcare promises that soon there will be a regulation allowing communes to apply the certificate locally. Coronavirus passport, as it is commonly called.

- In several municipalities and business environment there is a desire to be able to use the certificate to avoid closure, distance requirements and restrictions. We will swiftly implement a regulation that will allow municipalities to use certificates to mitigate local coronavirus laws, says Ingvild Kjerkol.

Consequence assessment

Trondheim is one of the municipalities that has called for such a solution.

Head of Communications Harry Tiller in Trondheim confirms that passports will be discussed over the weekend. On Monday morning, the crisis management meets to discuss the matter.

- We take note of what was said at today's press conference and that is something we need, says Tiller to the NTB.

It says the municipality needs to find out how best to use such a passport and what the consequences could be.

New tool

Health councilor Beate Husa (KrF) in Bergen says she has already been informed on Thursday that municipalities can now use passports. For now, the municipality is waiting a little and discussing this measure.

- It is clear that we will consider it. I am glad that the government is adding a new tool. We are in a particular phase of a pandemic and it is important that we receive government support. The measures that we can introduce in Bergen will allow us to live as normal as possible, says Husa to Bergensavisen.

Tromsø introduces vaccination passports. National application is also taken into account

The government also reports that it will take a closer look at the wider use of coronavirus certificates across the country.

- We will consider whether a certificate can be an appropriate measure to limit infections. For example, in nightclubs, concert halls, sports events, cinemas and theaters. Now that everyone has been offered a vaccine, it's easier to imagine that a certificate could be used. All this to prevent a large spread of infection, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
