The pre-Christmas period is fast approaching, and many people decorate their homes with Christmas lights. According to NBBL, you can complain if your neighbor's Christmas lights disturb us.

- There are no laws that specifically apply to Christmas lights, but the Housing Associations Act has general rules that say you should not use your home in a way that is excessively inconvenient for your neighbor, says Line CB Bjerkek's lawyer in Norske Boligbyggelag (NBBL ) in the press release.

Many people like to hang Christmas lights on the balcony or along the wall of the house. If a neighbor's Christmas lights are too annoying, Bjerkek advises people to address the neighbor's problem first.

- First, try some friendly methods that will turn off the lights at a certain time of the evening, which should be your regular bedtime for most people. If it doesn't work out, then you have to contact the estate management and file a complaint - he says.

The management can then possibly order the resident to turn off the lights at a certain time in the evening.

For private single family homes, it is more difficult to complain about a neighbor's Christmas lighting. Mainly due to the greater distance between the houses.

- With a lot of space between houses, it takes a long time for it to be perceived as a justified nuisance for the neighbor - says Bjerkek.
