Espen Rostrup Nakstad says that a new variant of the virus that has been detected, including in southern Africa, it does not necessarily cause a greater risk of human complications, but is more contagious.
The virus variant was detected in six countries, but was most common in the province of Guateng in South Africa. Nakstad tells the NTB that he thinks it is worrying that in the region it has shortly overtaken the delta variant in this region.
There is no guarantee that the virus variant will spread very quickly around the world. It is likely that it exists in more countries than we think. If it is much more contagious, it will outperform the delta variant in more and more countries, says Nakstad.
- It does not necessarily mean that you will get sick or that the vaccine is not working. But I'm a little worried if the vaccine is just as effective.
- But we have to be prepared for everything and make plans based on what is happening. And it is a job that we are doing continuously, today.
According to Nakstad, in the next two weeks you can learn more about how the vaccine works and about the course of the disease of the new variant.
