On December 3, the government introduced new restrictions as a result of a sharp increase in infection rates. Over the following weekend, both bars and restaurants saw a decline in both the number of transactions and the amount of transactions.

Using BankAxept cards is by far the most popular payment method for Norwegians when they are in a bar or restaurant

Vegar Heir's commercial manager at Vipps refers to recent data that indicates that the trend is continuing.
- Comparing Friday and Saturday this weekend to November 26 and 27, the weekend before closing, we see a large drop in BankAxept card usage. The bars saw a 44% decrease in the number of transactions and a 36% decrease in transaction amounts. Restaurants also experienced negative growth, but here the decline was slightly smaller, with 23% fewer transactions and a 14% decline in transaction amounts, says Heir.

Using BankAxept cards is by far the most popular payment method for Norwegians when they are in a bar or restaurant. During the previous shutdown, the nightlife industry recognized the need for alternative payment methods that would reduce contact between employees and guests. This was the reason why QR codes found their place on many guest tables. This weekend's figures show a sharp increase in people paying with Vipps on their mobile phones

- By comparison, on November 26 and 27, there was a 64% increase in the number of Vipps transactions in bars and restaurants. The increase in transaction amounts was 55 percent. Both employees and customers want to minimize the points of contact in the situation we find ourselves in. Then QR codes are an effective tool, says Heir.
