The Road Traffic Analysis is published annually and it is the police's knowledge of the causes of serious road accidents in Norway. This is the sixth report in a row.

Speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol continue to dominate

The analysis shows that speeding and drunk driving continue to dominate the causes of major road accidents with fatalities and serious injuries. Moreover, inattentive drivers continue to pose a challenge to road safety.

Road accidents are one of the major public health problems. This is also a crime area in Norway, as a result of which most people are killed.

The analysis should be used as a basis for deciding what measures to prioritize to prevent numbers fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic.

In preparing the risk assessment, information was obtained from the Norwegian Public Road Administration and other traffic safety partners, both at national and international levels.

Some statistics from Norwegian roads

In 2020, 93 people died on Norwegian roads and 627 were seriously injured.

2020 was the year of the highest number of fatalities and seriously injured on motorbikes. 130 people were killed or seriously injured on a heavy motorcycle and 30 people were killed or seriously injured on a light motorcycle.

Trucks contributed 12% accidents with fatalities and with serious injuries in 2020.

The main factors contributing to the fatalities in 2020 (89):
- Speed: 35%
- Alcohol, drugs, drugs and other intoxicants: 26%
- Fatigue: 16%
- Mobile phone: 2%

About 97-98% of drivers wear seat belts, passengers are slightly worse (95-96%)
and truck drivers (87%).

In 2020, 93 people died in 89 accidents on Norwegian roads. It was therefore the year with the lowest number of deaths in traffic in the entire history of accident registration. The death toll was 14% lower than in 2019.
