The European agency EMA believes that the spread of the omicron variant in the long term may change the situation. In such a way that Covid-19 will become a common disease that society can live with.

However, the EMA underlines that the pandemic continues.

"Nobody knows exactly when we'll be at the end of the road, but we'll get there." This is Marco Cavaleri, who is leading the agency's vaccination strategy.

"As immunity in the population increases - with the omicron there will be a large increase in natural immunity at the peak of vaccination - we will quickly move to a scenario where we are closer to an endemic disease," he says.

Endemic disease is a common disease in the region, and the term is often used to represent "epidemic disease" for which the number of cases increases rapidly over time.
