President Metsola, at the opening of the plenary session in Strasbourg, called on the Russian authorities to release all anti-invasive peaceful demonstrators wrongly detained.

As the shelling of Ukraine continues and the number of civilian casualties increases, President Metsola said: "Our indignation grows with every bullet fired, as does Ukraine's disobedience and the solidarity of our citizens."

She highlighted the enormous courage of those in Russia who continue to oppose the invasion of Ukraine despite imprisonment and brutal repression. Metsola expressed solidarity with them European Parliament.

On behalf of Parliament, the President called on the Russian authorities to grant freedom of speech, to stop intimidating protesters, and to immediately release all unjustly held detainees.
