- Norway and Sweden have close and trust-based relationships. I want to further strengthen cooperation, especially in the field of security and defense and green changes, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Prime Minister Støre will visit Stockholm on April 5 at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. They will both talk about war in Ukraine and enhanced Nordic defense cooperation, relations between Norway and Sweden, Nordic cooperation, green changes and experiences from the pandemic.
The cooperation between Norway and Sweden has deep roots
- Nordic cooperation is characterized by high trust, a strong community of values, well-functioning institutions and a solid tradition of cooperation. We saw the benefits of this again in relation to the war in Ukraine. This is something that we need to cordon off and strengthen, says Prime Minister Støre.
The cooperation between Norway and Sweden is deeply rooted and of great importance. Norway and Sweden are also very important trading partners for each other.
In 2022, Norway will take over the chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the two prime ministers will also discuss the possibilities of further development of the already close Norwegian-Swedish cooperation.
Together, we must protect the international legal order and our own security
– Nordic defense cooperation is becoming increasingly important in the face of the demanding security policy situation in Europe. Together we must protect the international legal order and our own security. There is further development of Nordic defense cooperation an important priority for Norway during our NORDEFCO presidency in 2022, says Prime Minister Støre.
- An important element is that the Swedish and Norwegian forces regularly train together, most recently during the Cold Response exercise in northern Norway, which my Swedish colleague visited in March - says Prime Minister Støre.
We must strengthen good energy cooperation between Norway and Sweden
The prime minister will also discuss green changes with representatives of Swedish business and industry.
- If we are to succeed in the green change in the Nordic region, we must strengthen good energy cooperation between Norway and Sweden. There are many opportunities to work together here, including CO2 capture and storage and focus on offshore wind, batteries and hydrogen, says Prime Minister Støre.
