The UN General Assembly today voted to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. 93 countries voted for the resolution, 24 countries voted against and 58 countries voted against. Norway was one of the countries that co-sponsored the resolution and voted to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.
Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine and brutal military actions in violation of international law have dramatic consequences for the people of Ukraine. Serious human rights violations have been committed. Photos from Bucza show cruel abuses and attacks on civilians. These actions are not consistent with the promotion and protection of human rights at the UN Human Rights Council. Norway is therefore one of the countries that voted to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council, says the minister foreign affairs Anniken Huitfeldt.
Russia will still be able to actively participate in debates and negotiations as observers
The UN Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body of the United Nations for the promotion and protection of human rights. 47 member states are elected once for three years. Russia's suspension from the UN Human Rights Council will forfeit the right to vote, which is reserved for the 47 member states of the Council. However, Russia will still be able to actively participate in debates and negotiations as observers, as Norway does today.
