The government will invest in large-scale battery production in Norway as part of a green boost to the industry. On Friday, the government held a summit on the government's battery strategy, attended by business leaders, organizations and others.
Before the summer, the government will present a separate battery strategy and the work is now in its final stages.
- Norway has advantages that allow us to be the best in class in battery production if we make the right choices today. We will use this opportunity to create value and new green jobs. We have green renewable energy, important raw materials and industrial expertise, which makes us well placed to become an attractive country for sustainable battery production, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
We want to set the direction of investment in batteries in Norway
During Friday's meeting, the government received information from companies, host municipalities, social partners, environmental organizations and other entities.
– We wanted to listen to representatives of industry, municipalities and others to set a clear direction investment in batteries in Norway. We received many good suggestions. It was also important for us to work closely with the European Battery Alliance. Both demand and needs na batteries are growing enormously around the world and we need to be part of the European battery value chain, says Minister of Trade and Industry Jan Christian Vestre.
International competitiveness is key
Batteries could become a major North to South industry in Norway, and we have a solid environment to participate in the entire battery value chain in that country.
- The government will make it easier for us to attract private capital, which enables the creation of battery factories in Norway. International competitiveness is key in this context. These include area, power and competence, says Vestre.
- The government is interested in creating new jobs, increasing exports and reducing emissions by 55 percent by 2030. Batteries are one of six important areas where government growth is focusing on green industries. Before the summer, the government will present an action plan, says the prime minister.
Several ministries are involved in the strategic work. The Friday meeting was also attended by the Minister of Climate and Environment, the Minister of Agriculture and Food, the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the Minister of Local Government and Poviat Affairs and the Secretaries of State at the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
