Last month, 12 men and 1 woman were killed in traffic. This is an increase of 11 people compared to April last year. And this year, that's a total of 10 more deaths in road traffic.

- If we look at the year as a whole, we have an increase compared to last year. Additionally, April was a particularly tragic month, says Trygg Trafikk's senior adviser Bård Morten Johansen. We are full speed ahead into the season where there is usually more fatalities than in other periods of the year. There was a lot of nice weather throughout the country in April. This, together with the removed coronavirus restrictions, is increasing activity among people. This places greater demands on each of us, regardless of how we approach movement. Now we need to sharpen our vigilance and turn on our senses.

Three people died on a bicycle / electric scooter

So far this year, three people have died in traffic on bicycles, one cyclist and two electric scooters. All the accidents were collision accidents.

- Many people nowadays find a bicycle and have a great experience both on the way to work and in their free time. At the same time, we know that cyclists and scooter riders electric in urban areas they are at high risk of injury. The most common bicycle accidents and electric scooters these are isolated accidents caused by curbs, holes in the road, etc. However, nthe most serious injuries are caused by collision accidentsespecially at intersections, he says Johansen.

Good interaction is a prerequisite for avoiding collisions

- In traffic we have to give each other room for maneuver. We have to give other road users time and space, stresses Johansen. Physical facilitation is an important safety measure and must be performed on the premises of the most vulnerable road users. People with the least protection and less traffic knowledge requirements must have priority over those with a driving license and better protection. Unfortunately, this is not the case in many places and then we have to share the route that we have at our disposal as best as possible.

Failure to comply with the obligation to yield causes uncertainty, irritation and misunderstanding between road users.

– Traffic evokes strong emotions and the level of conflict between different road users may be high – says Johansen. The responsibility of all road users to pay attention, be aware and cautious should not be repeated too often. This is undoubtedly an important basis in order to have as few traffic accidents as possible. Everyone in road traffic has a responsibility, Johansen concludes.
