Growing your own food yourself is fun and good for the climate

Greater climate awareness among the people of Norway has created a strong tendency to grow their own food in their own greenhouse. Below are some tips on what can be grown both small and large scale, and also what to consider for a bountiful harvest.

Growing your own food yourself is fun and good for the climate

Many people dream of a beautiful garden full of vegetables, berries and fruit to pick. And now, in times of growing climate awareness, more and more people are realizing this dream, which, in addition to pleasure, also reduces the impact on the environment. A large upward trend concerns not only those who live in single-family houses and have a garden for a greenhouse. Interest in the concept of urban gardening, i.e. cultivation on, for example, balconies and small terraces, has also grown rapidly.

How to start?

To get started, no matter where you live, it's important to dare to take your first steps and never be afraid of failure.

A little soil for plants and a box or flowerpot is a good start. The point is not to start something that is too complicated. For example, sugar peas and different varieties of lettuce are classics to start with. But even potatoes, which are more or less demanding plants, can be a good start.

The choice of vegetables that are relatively easy to grow is very large. Vegetables that are relatively easy to grow include peas, beets, carrots, onions, and radishes. And don't forget that there are also many different herbs that are easy to grow and that are wonderfully useful in cooking.

A good tip for a good harvest

One of the most common mistakes made by many in Norway is that they sow prematurely. If you do this, there is a high risk that frost will damage the plants and they will not get enough light. Therefore, it is a good idea to grow plants in a greenhouse if you can. The greenhouse will be able to protect the plants to a greater extent and provide good light. Overall, this lengthens the growing season, so you can get higher yields. Moreover, it will be a new place where the family can do something together.

 Good luck!
