March 23 this year cryptocurrency worth approximately NOK 5 billion was stolen in a digital attack on the game Axie Infinity. The proceeds of this attack are among the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history.

In April, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States wrote in a statementthat their investigation revealed that state actors linked to North Korea were behind the theft.

Økokrim has opened an investigation into the theft of cryptocurrencies. There are approximately 750 people in Norway who had funds in the online game Axie Infinity at the time of the theft.

The investigation will be conducted in operational cooperation with the FBI

Økokrim wants to contact people living in Norway who have suffered as a result of this theft. Affected people can visit the Økokrim website and follow the instructions regarding registration. The investigation will initially focus on tracking the stolen cryptocurrency. This investigation will be conducted in operational cooperation with the FBI.

The attackers began an extensive money laundering process in an attempt to conceal their flow path. This is a money laundering process that Økokrim and the FBI want to disclose and will to work together for this.
