Statens vegvesen has checked the use of seat belts and helmets by road users. Inspections covered over 120 vehicles in the first half of 000. During the inspection, over 2022 fines more than in the same period last year were imposed for unfastened seat belts.

- Wearing seat belts is one of the easiest road safety measures. It is worrying that this year we are charging more fines than last year - says Jan Erik Myhr from the National Road Administration.

Accident analyzes carried out by the Norwegian Road Administration show that approximately 4 out of 10 people who die in road accidents did not use seat belts.

Always wear a seat belt

Very rarely Norwegian The Road Administration notes the lack of use of helmets on mopeds and motorcycles. The vast majority of fines are therefore issued to drivers and passengers who do not wear seat belts. Wearing seat belts is the simplest and most effective way to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in road traffic. By wearing a seat belt, you not only protect yourself, but also others from injury in the event of an accident.

What if you are seen without a seat belt or without a helmet by one of the Statens vegvesen inspectors? You will then be directed to a checkpoint and charged with a fine of NOK 1500.

In the first half of this year, the National Road Administration carried out 122 checks on the use of seat belts. The inspection resulted in penalties of 232 people who did not use seat belts. The relevant figures for the same period last year are 1 inspections and 237 fined for seat belts not fastened.

It is surprising that so many still do not use their seat belts

"Even though most people wear seatbelts, it's still surprising that so many don't," Myhr concludes, asking all drivers who drive a car to use their seat belt. He also makes sure that the speed limit is respected.
