- There is a need to clarify the rules and strengthen the consumer's right to cash payment. The cash crisis in the run-up to May 17 has shown that cash payments must also be taken into account in emergencies, says Justice and Crisis Preparedness Minister Emilie Enger Mehl.

Under the proposal that the government is sending out for consultation today, the consumer will have the right to pay in cash at all serviced, permanent commercial premises where traders sell goods or services to consumers.

The current provisions of the Financial Contracts Act are unclear as to payment situations, the consumer has the right to pay in cash.

- The expectation to be able to pay with cash is strongest when the product or service is sold at physical points of sale. Such trade should be available to everyone, including those who cannot or do not want to use other solutions. Nevertheless, more and more stores are not accepting cash. The government wants to do something about it, says Mehl.
