Norway intervened in a case that Ukraine brought against Russia to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for violating the Genocide Convention.
The case concerns the Genocide Convention and actions in connection with Russia's aggressive war. Russia partly justified the invasion by saying that Ukraine had committed genocide against the Russian-Russian-speaking population in Luhansk and Donetsk.

Ukraine appealed to the International Court of Justice
Ukraine has asked the Court to rule that it has the right not to be falsely accused of genocide, which in turn is used as a pretext for an invasion. In its intervention, Norway will favor the interpretation of Ukraine under the Genocide Convention.
Norway supports the cause of Ukraine
This will be Norway's first intervention in a dispute between two countries before the ICJ. On 29 September, the government decided that Norway should intervene as a third party in the matter.
– We have a business legal in help in clarifying the issues raised in this case. It is also important to signal to Russia and the outside world that the international community does not accept aggression against Ukraine, says the minister foreign affairs Anniken Huitfeldt.
