“In Norway, we have a strong tradition of supporting each other in difficult times. The government's electricity subsidy program plays a decisive role in reducing household electricity bills when prices are as high as they are today. Therefore, we are sure that the system must remain in place until the energy crisis is resolved, says Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland.

From January to November 2022, Norwegian households were paid around NOK 24,1 billion in electricity subsidies. If we start with the estimated electricity prices for December, the total amount that will be paid out this year could be around NOK 33,2 billion. This estimate is subject to uncertainty, and we won't know until January exactly how much was paid out.

In 2022, the months of July, August and September were characterized by the highest electricity prices on average. For July, NOK 1,5 billion was paid out to support electricity, NOK 3,65 billion in August and NOK 4,55 billion in September.

So far in 2022, households living in southern Norway have received monthly electricity subsidies. Lately electricity prices also increased in central and northern Norway. This situation means that the entire country will probably receive electricity subsidies in December.

The electricity subsidy scheme in 2023 is estimated to cost NOK 44,7 billion. This means that the total electricity support payments in 2022 and 2023 could amount to over NOK 70 billion.
