In 2022, the police deported a total of 2695 people without legal residence from Norway. Of these, 163 are asylum seekers in Norway with a final refusal. This is an increase of 67 people in this category compared to 2021.
– If we go back to 2019, a year before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the police deported a total of 4157 people without legal residence, of which 358 were former asylum seekers, says PU head Arne Jørgen Olafsen.
The pandemic led to difficult conditions for return in the asylum category in the first half of last year. This is due to, among other things, vaccination requirements and/or a negative PCR test result.
– In this context, 163 forced returns in the asylum category are something we can be satisfied with. When the PU managed to implement so many decisions made by UDI and UNE, we must be able to say that coercion seemed credible when voluntarism did not work, Olafsen believes.
In 2022, a total of 366 people were turned back under the Dublin III Regulation. In the second half of the year, the number of returns in this type of cases increased.
– Two reasons in particular contribute to this increase. These include both the easing of entry restrictions and increased migration activity in connection with war in Ukraine. We see, for example, that 51 Ukrainians with some form of residence permit in another European country were deported under the Dublin III Regulation after February 2022, says Olafsen.
Deportation of the convict
Last year, the police forcibly deported 640 people who were subject to at least one criminal measure. This is 24 percent of all returns in 2022. For comparison, in 2021, 1663 convicts were deported. The big difference is due to the large number of expulsions in 2021, many of them registered as convicts.
