From January 1 to June 1, 2023, there is an amnesty for weapons in Norway. In January, the police already received 2023 firearms.

What does gun amnesty mean? It means that people in possession of illegal unregistered firearms can hand them over to the police without penalty.

– The gun amnesty was introduced to prevent crime and serious accidents. That's why we welcome every illegal unregistered weapon that ends up with the police, says Liv Aasberg Corneliussen, head of section at the Norwegian Police Directorate.

There are only four months left until the amnesty. That's why the police are urging people to continue to deliver guns and not wait until the last minute.

“The experience from previous arms amnesties is that most people wait until the end of the amnesty period. That's why the police recommend that people use the whole period, also to avoid queues, says Corneliussen.

Data from past gun amnesties

  • In 2017, 8000 weapons were delivered
  • In 2008, 13 weapons were delivered
  • In 2003/2004, 35 weapons were delivered
